PAGAN ASTROLOGY AND THE STAR OF BETHLEHEM

🌟 In the Lord of Spirits episode "Taught by a Star to Worship the Sun of Righteousness", Father Andrew Stephen Damick and biblical scholar, Father Stephen de Young discuss the phenomenon of the Star of Bethlehem. In the modern world our ideas about looking towards the heavens for knowledge is entirely taken up by astronomy (or aliens, even more recently). Present best mechanical theory suggests that a comet created the illusion of a stationary star hovering over Bethlehem due to temporary geosynchronous motion, visible in broad daylight and lasting for about 70 days. Father Stephen explains the fascinating way the ancients looked at the heavens, as he connects the stars of first century astrology and the concept of time.

In a post on change and progress we explored how and why the ancients experienced the concept of time and its passing differently (link).

One difference being that what we call one o'clock is a mere moment when the hour strikes, while for the Greeks and Romans the first hour lasted until the second hour.

This is a schedule of Roman time versus Jewish time keeping in the first century AD (link).

The Fathers go into what the birth of Christ metaphysically means for the Universe. Of course we have to wait until the Resurrections for Him to conquer Hades, changing the very nature of the Universe. But His birth obviously foreshadows this momentous event, so that "the stars may sing" and man may be reunited with Creation.
