(LIVE BLOG) OPERATION EPIC FURY/RISING LION IN IRAN, PART 2
Following our previous reporting (link), the operation in Iran on Sunday went into its second day. There have been missile alerts from various locations in Israel. Targets in and around the Gulf have been hit by Iranian missiles. Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei has been confirmed dead. As his successor is mentioned Sadegh Larijani, a Kantian philosopher (you can't make this stuff up) (election protocol). Khamenei is said to have named four layers of succession for each of the military command and government roles that are appointed by the Supreme Leader (link). We do well to remember that Iran has two armed forces: one is the regular standing Army, Navy and Air Force, the second is the IRGC, the Revolutionary Guard, a kind of ideological paramilitary that solely serves the interests of the regime (command structure: link).

President Donald Trump: "I have just been informed that we have destroyed and sunk nine Iranian Naval Ships, some of them relatively large and important. We are going after the rest (...) we largely destroyed their Naval Headquarters" (link).
US Central Command announces that three US service members have been killed and five have been seriously wounded in Kuwait as part of the ongoing US military operation in Iran.
Yesterday we reported that Iran had closed the Strait of Hormuz. But today Iran says it has no intention of closing the Strait. Experts have pointed out that the matter is not that simple, as Iran would essentially block its own oil trade.
The Strait will be closed to shipping, but in a more subtle way. Ship insurers are cancelling war risk policies and are expected to raise premiums by up to fifty percent from Monday, which is a prohibitive level (link).
The IRGC has hit a Maersk vessel in the Gulf. The issue reveals a split between the two factions. One is working with the US and the other with London.
The BBC this morning appeared to be in deep mourning over the death of the Supreme Ayatollah. The British PM Keir Starmer and French President Macron, as the two former colonial powers in the region, are out of the loop. The new world has arrived.
The background and history of colonial politics in the region is complicated. The following posts should at least explain some of the details.

🚨🇮🇷🇺🇸🇨🇳 Iran's Hormuz gambit has one massive problem: it hurts China more than America. The Strait of Hormuz just closed. Oil spiked 12% in hours. British Defense Secretary John Healey was caught lying as he told Sky News on Sunday morning that two missiles launched by Iran toward Cyprus had been successfully intercepted. The UK is the former colonial power on Cyprus and still has two Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs) on the island.
Healey added that he does not believe that they were targeting Cyprus, but he made the point to show how real and increasing the threat is from "a regime that attacks widely across the region is, and this means that it requires us to take action".

But Cypriot government officials denied the event took placc. Defense Minister Vassilis Palmas as well as Government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis categorically rejected claims that missiles were fired in the direction of the island (link).
The UK Daily Mail just reported they spoke to President Trump over the phone. They say he told them that the operation is going to take probably four weeks, or less. I think we should not take that claim too seriously. President Trump is not in the habit of revealing military details.

There have not yet been many serious analyses about the strategery of the operation. But a few guys on RAV are quite impressed. For what it's worth.

Ok, here’s my honest take.Every piece snapping into place like clockwork.China has spent years dodging Western oil sanctions by quietly sourcing from Venezuela and Iran, keeping its economy insulated from USD pressure.
