Following our previous reporting (link), the operation by US and Israeli forces in Iran on Wednesday went into its fifth day. Civic flights to Larnaca, Cyprus have resumed despite the Hellenic Air Force neutralizing two Iranian kamikaze drones over the island (link). The buildup of foreign military forces in and around Cyprus is necessary, but the Republic of Cyprus itself is not party to the conflict, spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Tuesday (link). France is sending air defense assets and the frigate Languedoc with ETA off the coast of Cyprus this evening. The Dutch frigate Evertsen is also deploying to the East Med, a Defense spokesperson said.

March 4, 2026 RSBN Replay: presser by Karoline Leavitt from the White House,

In Iran proper Mojtaba Khamenei, son of Ali Khamenei has been elected as the new Supreme Leader of Iran. He says his first priority will be to take revenge on those behind his father’s killing, and his second priority will be to free Palestine and end Israel.

The regime is creating the appearance of normalcy, but the center of gravity has shifted to the IRGC and whoever controls the hardware and the money. The election is controversial as Junior lacks the proper status as a cleric.

A new development is the inclusion of Turkey in the fray. The Ministry of Defense reported that a ballistic missile fired from Iran toward Turkish airspace was intercepted by a US Navy ship in the Med with an SM-3 air defense unit. Debris found in Hatay/Dörtyol belongs to the interceptor missile.

Those yelling "Article 5" should calm down. It's not as if every tin can falling onto NATO territory automatically triggers the combined wrath of the transatlantic alliance. That's just silly.

A Turkish official, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, said the missile had been "aimed at a base in Greek Cyprus but veered off course". He may have had in mind, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan urging Hezbollah to attack Cyprus for assisting the evacuation of Israel's air fleet when it was under attack by Hamas.

But it is also unlikely that Iran would target Turkey. President Erdogan went out of his way to publicly oppose sanctions on Iran and criticized the US and Israel for attacking.

Another possible target may have been Haydar Aliyev Terminal in the Turkish port city of Ceyhan, where oil transported from Azerbaijan arrives before being shipped on tankers to Israel.

Turkey does not have missile defense systems, except for the Russian S-400, which is in limited quantity and of uncertain effectiveness. Turkey has also long been trying to create their own, so far without mass production.
