OPERATION EPIC FURY/ROARING LION IN IRAN, DAY 6

Following our previous reporting (link), the operation by US and Israeli forces in Iran on Thursday went into its sixth day. A diplomatic spat has erupted between Ankara and Athens over Greek plans to strategically deploy a Patriot air defense system on the island of Karpathos in the Dodecanese, between Rhodes and Crete. More reporting on that issue (link) in a separate post (link). In new developments in the war, we saw Iranian attacks on Azerbaijan and Turkey. Col. Douglas McGregor is reporting a drone attack on the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline in Georgian territory. It is carrying Azerbaijani crude across the Caucasus to the Turkish Mediterranean coast. This pipeline network provides thirty percent of Israel’s oil resources.

Iran targeted Azerbaijan with two Iranian drones that struck territory in Nakhchivan International Airport and other civilian infrastructure near a school in Shekarabad village (link). Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev said that armed forces have been instructed to prepare and implement counter measures.

Azerbaijan is a Turkic nation aligned with Israel. Iran denied the attacks saying "Iran’s policy is only to strike the military bases of its enemies operating in the region.

To clear up a misunderstanding yesterday regarding the involvement of the Kurds: the ground offensive in Iran was launched by Iranian Kurds who are based in Northern Iraq. Not Iraqi Kurds themselves, who have denied involvement.

Kurdish TV has confirmed President Trump had phone calls with three people in Kurdistan: Mustafa Hijri, leader of the Iranian Kurdistan Alliance, Masoud Barzani in Iraq and Bafel Jalal Talabani (link).

The Turkish Ministry of Defense reported that a ballistic missile fired from Iran toward Turkish airspace was intercepted by a US Navy ship in the Med. Debris belonging to the interceptor missile was found in Hatay/Dörtyol.

Given Turkish President Erdogan's friendly statements towards Iran, there was some speculation if the actual target could perhaps have been Cyprus or Greece.

But unconfirmed reports suggest that an Iranian ballistic missile was attempting to target Incirlik Air Base, in what would be the second attack against Turkey by Iran.

Footage shows an exoatmospheric ballistic missile interception, likely by a US Army THAAD or US Navy SM-3 over Northeastern Syria near the border with Turkey (link).

The British RAF Base Akrotiri in Cyprus was once again the target of an Iranian kamikaze drone. It smashed a 30-foot hole in the wall of a hangar that houses US U-2 spy planes. No injuries were reported.

The Cypriot EU presidency confirmed that given the partial disruptions to flight connections to Cyprus due to the current geopolitical tensions, the meeting of Finance Ministers has been postponed to March 27-28.

In the meantime Turkey's Defense Ministry’s spokesman, rear admiral Zeki Akturk said that Turkey will not hesitate to act against "hostile attitudes" towards the Turkish Cypriots as the conflict in the region widens.

Turkey is by the side of TRNC, the Turkish occupied zone in Northern Cyprus. "Turkey will not hesitate to use the powers granted to us by our guarantor status against hostile attitudes which threaten the security of the Turkish Cypriots". he said in a press conference.

The comments are interpreted as a warning to Iran (link), not threats against Greece or the countries sending naval assistance to the East Med. For now, at least.

Naval forces from Spain, the Netherlands, France and Italy are deploying to Cyprus. France, Italy and Greece have agreed to coordinate their military deployment.

The French frigate Languedoc has arrived, while the French air craft carrier Charles De Gaulle is expected in the East Med early next week.

Britain has angered its allies with its painfully slow response to the Iran war. The destroyer HMS Dragon in Portsmouth won't be ready to sail until next week, then needs another week to reach Cyprus. The order arrived only on the chief of defense staff's desk on Tuesday morning, four days after the war started.

The Cypriots and Middle Eastern allies are furious about Britain's delays in letting the US use its bases. Britain eventually deployed jets and gave missile interceptors to allies. But the damage from the dithering might be impossible to recover from.

Spain's attitude has also angered allied forces refusing initial assistance to use its airspace. Spain exported more than €1.3 million worth of dual-use materials to Iran in 2024 and the first half of 2025 (link).
