The visit of Marco Rubio has particular weight in Athens as he is the first US Secretary of state also holding the post of National Security Adviser since Henry Kissinger. Kissinger green-lighted the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The fact has clouded relations between Greece and the US to this day.
Although the situation in Cyprus is nowhere near resolution, it rests on Marco Rubio's shoulders to overcome this fifty year old stumbling block with a historic speech on Pnyx Hill.
The hill is located meters to the west of the Acropolis of Athens and served as the historic meeting place for the Athenian Assembly. It is widely recognized as "the birthplace of democracy".
Marco Rubio’s speech at the Pnyx is scheduled for today at 6:30 PM local time in Athens (EEST), 11:30 AM Eastern and 8:30 AM Pacific. We'll find a live stream somewhere...stay tuned!

The "heavy" agenda of Marco Rubio.
Rubio arrives in Athens in a delicate period in Greek-Turkish relations. The planned resumption of seabed surveys for the Greece-Cyprus electricity interconnection project, and Greece’s close relationship with Israel, have given rise to tensions with Ankara.

The top item on the list is the AIM-260, a highly classified long-range missile built to fit inside stealth jets, which would let Greece's future F-35s hit targets from 200+ km away without giving up their stealth. The AIM-260 is still in development.

Athens also wants long-range JASSM-ER cruise missiles that can strike around 1,000 km away, plus Harpoon anti-ship missiles for the Aegean and a range of other air-to-air missiles and precision bombs. In addition Greece wants access to surplus defense material through the Pentagon’s Excess Defense Articles program.

Which roads are closed for the visit of Marco Rubio to Athens.
Athens looks at Rubio as someone who knows the area and the issues better than most. Rubio was coauthor of the EastMed Security and Energy Partnership Act in 2019, and the US-Greece Defense and Interparliamentary Partnership Act in 2021.
The fact that along with being secretary of state, Rubio is also national security adviser – the first person to hold both positions since Henry Kissinger – is indicative of his influence in shaping US foreign policy, let alone being a leading contender for the Republican nomination for president in 2028.
