(DOCUMENTARY) MOUNT ATHOS AND THE JESUS PRAYER

Today three special videos about Mount Athos, the Holy Mountain in northern Greece. It is an independent monastic republic that has existed for at least 1200 years, but probably even longer than that. The first video is a general introduction to the Athonite community, a podcast by Euan Michael, who is an English Orthodox blogger, keeping us abreast about the situation in the United Kingdom. The second video is a documentary made in 2010 by American author Dr Norris-Symeon Chumley who converted to Eastern Orthodoxy.

Nov. 22, 2025 Euan Michael: Mount Athos Explained.

Dr Symeon Chumley is a film director, writer and producer who lives in New York. He learnt about Orthodoxy, was baptized with the name Simeon and was inspired by the noetic* Jesus Prayer. In 2010 he produced the documentary "Mysteries of Jesus Prayer" (IMDb) (review).

*Noetic refers to nous. The nous is often translated as either 'mind' or 'thought'. Although related, it is not quite that. In contrast to a string of thoughts, the nous is the receptor of thought that 'hits' us out of the blue, akin to an intuition. These are small 'revelations', if you will. The location of the nous is in the heart. Its purpose is to experience direct knowledge of God. Father Stephen de Young explains it in this video on idea versus thought.

Jan, 4, 20-25 "Mysteries of the Jesus Prayer" documentary (2010)(Full DVD Version).

Part of the documentary was shot in Ukraine and Russia around 2010 before the coup of 2014 and the purge and persecution of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and its replacement by a Western oriented political entity (more).

The channel of the Greek publishing house, Athos Publications had an interview with Dr Symeon Chumley on the occasion of the publication of the Greek edition of the DVD and the accompanying book earlier this year.

Sep. 30, 2025 Athos Publications: Από την Νέα Υόρκη στο Άγιον Όρος | Νorris-Symeon Chumley. (From New York to the Holy Mountain). Interview in English starts at 1:20 mark.
