Father Andrew Stephen Damick, known from podcasts like "The Lord of Spirits" on Ancient Faith Radio with Father Stephen De Young (link), and talks on his YouTube channel (link), is running podcast, "The Great Tales" with filologist, Deacon Seraphim, formerly known as Richard Rohlin, who is well known from his association with Jonathan Pageau on "The Symbolic World" (link). Every new episode of "The Great Tales" is automatically uploaded on the playlist in the pages section at the top of this blog (link). But every now and then we are also dealing with the most remarkable episodes here in separate posts.  This summer: the Oedipus Cycle.

Deacon Seraphim's introduction could have come straight from my own heart. One of the West's great philosophical mistakes made quite early on in its post schismatic history, was the scholastic pursuit of the philosophy of nominalism (link)

One of its many failings is the removal of hierarchy. If everything is a thing in itself, without any root or relation to anything else in the context, the hierarchy of knowledge and tradition is one of the first things of value to fall by the wayside. 

As I am heading to the Mycenean heartland in Argolis, the ancient Theater of Epidaurus (built 4th century BC). part of the Sanctuary of Asklepios, the god of medicine (link) for a performance of Andromache (link), the Fathers are back for part 2 of Antigone.  You can also watch the movie scrolling down to the entry on July 13.

July 4, 2025 The Great Tales - The Great Tales - Antigone: Unwept, Unburied [Ep. 18].

Part 1 of "Antigone" includes an overview of the structure of Classical Greek drama. The Fathers are away on assignment until early August. We shall have to bide our time for part 2.

In the meantime I found a wonderful period flick from 1961, a Greek production with the late Irene Pappas in the role of Antigone and featuring also other great actors of the golden era of Greek cinema (IMDb). English subtitles.
