HOW TO REMAIN HUMAN IN THE AGE OF AI?
We keep harping on AI, because it is probably the hottest topic of our time. If the tech oligarchs are to be believed, the technology is going to change our lives in revolutionary ways. But much of what they say is propaganda and marketing. A lot is at stake. Billions of venture capital has already been poured into these products. And liability is the next big fall out to be resolved. Per usual when we are on the subject of AI, we list our most important findings. We do this, because the proper use of this dangerous technology depends on that our proper identification: what it is, and what it is not. In a recent talk at Austin Union, Jonathan Pageau laid out what it means to live in accord with our God-given humanity in an age of rapidly advancing AI. Drawing upon essential biblical truths and the latest discussions of transhumanism, Pageau highlights the danger of making an idol out of artificial super-intelligence.

So here’s what we know:
- AI can’t become conscious since it is not a living entity; it is a glorified calculator.
- Therefore AI is not a life form and it is soulless.
- AI is an abstraction. It does not have a physical body, which is a precondition for actual, embodied intelligence. The word “intelligence” is an anthropomorphism. Computation is not human intelligence. The makers have chosen to make AI communicate in a very personal way and in an authoritative tone. Tech oligarchs are responsible for the conscious choice to anthropomorphize AI with all the psychosis that entails (calls for “human rights,” eroticism, etc.).
- AI feeds off our attention. Attention is more than simply an acknowledgment of existence. Prolonged and intense attention is a form of worship and part of the self is sacrificed in the process, if only in the time that we give to it. In our culture that is translated into monetization.
- The quality of its output can never be better than the best input. At a certain point AI will start to feed on itself. It will start training on its own production. Recycling and cannibalism is inevitable. AI in that sense is parasitic; it’s not a thing in itself.
- AI only takes into consideration information it has access to on the Internet. But there is still, and there always will be much ancient knowledge and information that has not been digitized or even committed to paper.
