CONCERT: "FROM BYZANTIUM TO TODAY"

On the day of the commemoration of the historical event of the Fall of Constantinople on May 29 in 1453 we have a separate commemoration here. But on this page we present you with another concert of the Orchestra Estoudiantina of Neo Ionia (YouTube channel) led by musician and composer Andreas Katsigiannis (YouTube channel). The orchestra has become a much watched fixture on this blog (links at the bottom). The concert features the popular Greek singer Dimitris Basis (pr. bahsees) who also signed for the original concert version of "The Great Hours" (link), a composition of Katsigiannis' own hand.

Program curator and Artistic Director: Andreas Katsigiannis

The Choir of the University of Thessaly

A journey through the history of Greek Music.

Starting from the Byzantine era, Andreas Katsigiannis, composer and Artistic Director of the Orchestra Estoudiantina of Neo Ionia, presents this special journey through the Greek landscape of our music, starting from Byzantium, through the period of the Asia Minor catastrophe culminating in 1922 with the burning of the city of Smyrna in Ionia (now Izmir), to the traditional songs that are the natural continuation of Eastern Roman hymns and melodies and the subsequent course of Greek songs until today.

His companions in this concert are of the most important singers of the younger generation, Dimitris Basis and the special singer and permanent collaborator of Estoudiantina, Aspasia Stratigou.

Special reference is made to the greatest Greek music composers, Manos Hadjidakis and Mikis Theodorakis, stating that "perhaps the best musical treasures were written back then".

As the musical journey continues, Dimitris Basis and Andreas Katsigiannis with the sounds of the Estoudiantina of Nea Ionia, will present songs from their personal discography and their joint collaboration with great songs of leading Greek singers Stelios Kazantzidis, Grigoris Bithikotsis, Dimitris Mitropanos and others.
