(LONGREAD) A POPULIST COALITION FOR THE POST DEMOCRATIC ERA

As many have commented over the years, we are currently in the midst of a political re-alignment. Alexander Mercouris of The Duran recently had an interview with Conservative British scholar, John Laughland (Wiki) and Dutch opposition politician, Thierry Baudet (Wiki). They are looking back on the Covid-19 years and the fall-out this had on cultures and societies. The tyrannical, centrally directed policies and narratives have destroyed what confidence citizens still had in Governments and institutions.

Aug. 14, 2023 The Duran: Denying liberty, eroding democracy with Thierry Baudet, John Laughland and Alexander Mercouris.

During the interview Laughland asks the rhetorical question why the most liberal societies became the most tyrannical in imposing their policies in the Covid-19 years. We answered that question in a recent post, "Woke Ideology: the West is Becoming a Leper Colony" (link).

In the US globalists are trying to eliminate the champion of the middle classes, the blue collar billionaire Donald Trump. In Germany globalist politicians are trying to ban the main populist opposition party, AfD.

Baudet's party may be next in the Netherlands, where various globalist law-makers also expressed the wish to ban Baudet's FVD party in order to 'save democracy'.

Many Dutch still can't accept we are now living in the post democratic era. Here's an article in 'European Conservative' showing the writer is still unrealistically believing a 'right-wing' coalition is possible (link). If that was the case, there would have been one years ago. The ruling cartel has closed ranks and will continue to do so.

Nevertheless there is a strange, new phenomenon going on. The rats are leaving the sinking ship.  One politician after another is calling it quits after years in politics. Something bad is about to break for which no one wants to be held accountable.

The fourth and final Rutte Government resigned months ago, but for reasons best known to themselves elections will not be held until November 22! The expected disaster will apparently not hit the country before that time.

Those shaping the narratives recently changed the definition of 'conspiracy theories' to mean, a myth, a made up story. But that is a fallacy. Some conspiracies may actually be true.

In fact, a shocking number of them have lately turned out be entirely accurate. It's an old CIA trick from the JFK assassination years to call explanations they don't like, conspiracy theories.

Another fallacy born of the Covid years is the idea that the experts must be believed at all times, whereas those seen as non experts, should shut up because they can't know what they're talking about.

But history is made by individuals who went against the current of popular beliefs and later turn out to have been right after all. The fateful ocean liner "Titanic" was built by expert ship builders, whereas the Ark was built by amateurs.

Very few people have discovered it, but Laughland has! He explains why democracy is impossible on the international level. Because on that level it is not possible to insert the necessary structure to facilitate accountability. A democracy must necessarily be embedded in the structure of a national state on a level close to the voters.

Historically Mercouris is a man of the Left, but there are any number of issues where the Left and the Right are finding each other these days. Especially when it comes to economic globalism and foreign policies. We are living in one of those rare eras that is defined by historian, economist, and demographer, Neil Howe as 'a fourth turning' (link).

One element is lacking from the Laughland-Baudet combination. The Right is still identifying as Conservative, but that has become a misnomer. It is true that Populist Nationalists want to preserve those elements of the past that are valuable.

But economic policies associated with globalist 'free markets' have proved to be fatal to the social fabric of the individual nation. Offshoring and outsourcing to China and importing millions of illegal workers have been the death knell for a skilled, prosperous and happy nation.

In the US, President Trump has been the champion of the middle classes. He repatriated a large part of the manufacturing base and attracted investment in new plants and industries. He protected jobs by putting a stop to the influx of illegal migrants that has been depressing wages for decennia.

I don't know about Laughland, but Baudet has been known to come across as snotty and snobbish. Like many Dutch he is confusing class and morality. At the moment he is too much of an intellectual to appeal to the middle class. His colleague, the embattled Geert Wilders has better credentials in that department.

Both Baudet and Laughland are stressing the necessity of international platforms for Populist Nationalists. Baudet's party app will be updated so it can function as an international social network for individuals and for companies and products in the model of PublicSq in the US (website, video). There's an alternative for Amazon too, at MyStore.com. Baudet also discovered that we must stop patronizing corporations that hate us.

A separate issue, but related is the story of Mercouris' aunt, Melina Mercouri (IMDB) (photos). Besides being a good egg and a Culture Minister in the Socialist Pasok Government, she was a famous film diva in the golden years of Greek film production. Some of the movies became box office winners in the West. "Never on Sunday" and "Topkapi" became massive hits at the time.
