FIDIAS SITS DOWN WITH NIGEL FARAGE
Have not been on the subject of the EU and its institutions for years, having said goodbye to the worthless brothel in Brussels a long time ago. But when Cypriot independent MEP Fidias Panayiotou is interviewing Nigel Farage for an hour and a half, you pay attention. Apart of this interview being very entertaining, it is also instructive in other respects. Having lived on both sides of their particular ends of Europe, I can relate to both: the northwest with its traditional nation states, existing next to neighbors that only differ in style, but not in substance. Whereas on the other end of Europe in the southeast, the situation is historically much different. The Eastmed is very old and tough neighborhood of many peoples of different values, histories and cultures they do not necessarily share with each other.

From that point of view and from Fidias' perspective, it seems like a good idea to surround yourself with allies who can help you in times of trouble. But the divided island of Cyprus itself is testament to how worthless these alliances really are. Not just now, but also historically (link).
We recently did an entire post on the non-existence of so-called international law (link).
The arguments why we should like the European Union are mostly just fallacies or superficial constructs: like, it's so nice we no longer have to change money on the other side of the border! As if that is in any way proportionate to the redistribution of wealth going on, the democratic deficits or the loss of sovereignty!
Or the sort of fallacies Fidias is bringing up himself like, so great we have this student exchange program. As if bilateral relations are impossible without the EU! People don't think this through and buy that sort of nonsense. How do they think we lived prior to the EU?
By the way, for all his genius, Elon Musk once again shows his mental tardiness. He may send rockets into space and back, but upon the first sign of disagreement starts cancelling people without any self awareness. Intelligence takes many shapes!

Fidias kindly provided us with time stamps to facilitate navigation through his interview.
